Daylight in Architecture

Natural light plays a vital role in our day-to-day lives, providing us with comfort, promoting good health, and influencing our mood. In the field of architecture, incorporating ample natural light into our designs is crucial as this adds significant value to the overall development of the home.


Natural light holds immense importance for our biological well-being. It plays a crucial role in the organism's physiological temporal organisation, facilitating the synchronisation of our circadian rhythm with the natural cycles of day and night. Known as our biological clock, the circadian rhythm encompasses a 24-hour cycle that regulates the biological processes of all living beings. We’ve listed several design approaches to achieve optimal natural daylight into the living spaces while ensuring occupant comfort and well-being.


Exterior & Interior Layout


Discussing the exterior and interior layout with our client for their home is essential to ensure that their specific needs, preferences, and vision are understood and incorporated into the design from the beginning as we believe this sets the foundation for a successful and tailored development process. The interior layout is then carefully considered to ensure that daylight could reach deep into the dwelling i.e. open floor plans, light-colored surfaces, and the use of selective and researched materials can help distribute and amplify natural light within the living spaces.


Site Analysis


Understanding the sun's path helps determine the availability of sunlight throughout the day and across different seasons. This knowledge enables to identify the areas of the building that receive the most sunlight and those that may remain in shadow. This analysis helps determine the ideal orientation and placement of window openings.

Daylight analysis


By harnessing computer simulations and advanced daylighting analysis tools, we can comprehensively assess how natural light is distributed within the dwelling throughout the year. This analysis enables us to evaluate and refine the positioning of windows, achieving an optimal balance of light penetration while mitigating glare.


Window Placement


Strategic window placement in specific living areas, such as those offering views of the surrounding landscape, enables occupants to establish a profound connection with nature, thereby enhancing their overall well-being. This intentional arrangement fosters a harmonious link between the interior and exterior environments, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in the beauty of the natural surroundings.


Shading Devices & Objects


To mitigate excessive heat gain and glare, we explore various shading devices such as overhangs, blinds, or curtains to incorporate into the design. These devices enable occupants to regulate the amount of daylight entering the space based on their preferences and specific requirements. Externally, we can incorporate landscaping treatments, such as strategically positioned trees, to provide shade to the building, particularly during peak heat periods. This shading effectively reduces the direct solar radiation that reaches the surfaces of the building, including windows, walls, and roofs. As a result, it prevents the transfer of heat into the interior spaces, promoting a more comfortable environment.
